Self-control

Posted on June 6, 2017July 29, 2024
Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self–control... Self-control. It is spoken of by some as old-school, outdated. It’s seen as a hindrance to a free and happy life. Some say that one should do what one feels like doing without being worried about the consequences. “You only live once, so why not make the best out of it?”, they say. But while the idea of a carefree, no-consequences life seems attractive, it really is an illusion. Because the truth is our actions do have consequences. There is an echo to what we say and do. We harvest according to our actions and lifestyle. For example, the so-called “sexually active” people run the risk of catching very serious sexually-transmitted diseases (STD), including those that kill like HIV-AIDS. Aside from the physical risks, there are very real dangers like loss of relationships (family, friends), loss of career, unwanted pregnancy which can result to the great sin of abortion or the taking care of a baby when one is not supposed to or ready for. Many youth are not able to finish studies because of “happy-go-lucky” lifestyles that bring destruction instead of true happiness and success. Those who may manage to avoid acquiring STD or producing a pregnancy can suffer from deep guilt or shame, regrets, destroyed self-image, rejection from sexual partners, financial complications or losses, and much more. Self-control is essential in avoiding trouble. But even more so, it is necessary in achieving success. The best things that last require work, hard work. They are tiring, but the results are always worth the sacrifices. Self-control is at the heart of every worthwhile project, every lofty dream, and every loving pursuit. Self-control says “Yes” to the good, godly, and worthwhile things”. It also says “No” to things that are not helpful, wholesome, or right. If you want to succeed in any important area of your life, you need to practice self-control. The Holy Spirit produces self-control in us (Galatians 5:22-23). He gives us the power to respond properly to stimulus and ideas: Yes to good and godly ones, and No to unwise or wrong ones. Let’s ask his help today and every single day of our lives so that we can live to please God and be good testimonies to those around us. God’s rich blessings on you and your family today!   Lathur Badoy
