Desiring God and longing for God in the Bible
By Asaph - Psalm 73:25-26 "Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God, is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
By the sons of Korah - Psalm 84:1-2, 10; Psalms 27-4; Matthew 13:44-46
In contrast, many Christians have very little desire for God and Spiritual things
Philippians 3:18-20; Matthew 19:21-22; 1 Corinthians 15:33-34
Why we should desire God and long for him
1. God is the most glorious and desirable being there was, is, or ever will be (Psalm 145:3, 5; Psalm 27:4)
2. Our deepest longings find their satisfaction in God alone (Psalm 84:1-2, 10; Psalm 16:11)
3. We find answers to life's perplexing and troubling issues in God's presence alone (Psalms 73:12-14, 16-18, 23-24; Habakkuk 1:3-4, 13, 17-18)
4. We find our true identity and destiny in God alone (Exodus 33:11;2, Corinthians 3:18)
How to cultivate desire for God and longing for God
1. Watch out and refuse to accept counterfeits for "God".
- Religiosity without relationship with God (Matthew 15:8)
- "Half-way Christianity" (Exodus 10:24)
- Lukewarm spirituality (Revelation 3:16)
2. Immediately arrest apathy in your heart toward God and spiritual things (Hebrews 3:12-13; Hebrews 12:16)
3. Resolve to love God with all of you; no holding back (Matthew 22:37-38; Luke 14:26-27)
4. Draw the line of your commitment to God, and stick to it (Acts 20:24)
5. Spend some time with God every single day of your life; no excuses (Luke 22:39-40; Psalm 5:3)
