Going Back to your First Love
Revelation 2:4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.
The Lord is calling you and me to return to the fire of love that we had for him when we first knew him! He is not pleased with lukewarm love, but only with fiery love. Cold love is definitely not acceptable to God.
Is Jesus Christ still the undisputed priority and passion of your life? Is he still your greatest joy, dream, and fulfillment? Or have you grown cold spiritually? Are you still going through the motions of the Christian life (reading your Bible, going to church, attending life group, and serving in some way), but your heart is no longer burning for God? Today, the Lord is calling you to forsake any thing and any person in your heart that has become the number 1 in your life. That thing or person (no matter how innocent-looking or “valid” it or the relationship may be) has become your idol, your god. You must make the wrong thing in your heart right as soon as you can. You don’t need to completely give up valid pursuits or relationships (unless they are clearly immoral or sinful), but you need to remove them from being the most important and pleasurable to you, and give that highest place to God and God alone. God wants you to live with him as the greatest prize and joy of your life.
When you have any person or thing in your life as the most valued object of your heart, your life is out of order! If you continue living that way, you will eventually hurt your self and others as well. God knows what is best. The safest and most fulfilled life is one that is lived with God as the center and foundation of your life. When God is the undisputed treasure of your life, you will experience righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. You are at your best when the Lord is the “first love” of your life.
If today you see that you have given your heart to other loves, choose to return to the Lord! If you see that you are cold toward God and spiritual things, make a turn-around right away. Even if you are involved in church but your heart is lukewarm (not hot or cold) toward God, you need to ask God to help you be on fire for God again. Ask God to revive your heart and set it on fire again. Don’t delay. Do it now!
Whatever your need or situation may be right now, the Lord can touch your life! He can meet your need and bless your life. Ask him, and you will receive, so that your joy may be full.
