Where do you get your sense of worth and security? What or who gives you your value and assurance in this world? I submit to you that your self-image and confidence to face whatever may come in the future has to be based on something objective, unshakable, and consistent. Otherwise, you will find yourself to be a victim of rejection, unfair criticism, betrayal, negative turn of events, and similar things. If you base your value on your comparatively better looks or superior brains or religiosity, you may find yourself shaken when someone more attractive or smart or more spiritual comes along. The truth is that nothing is permanent in this world. Nothing except the person of God and the Word of God. Every one or everything else can come and go. Riches can come and go. Friends can come and go. Families can be broken. Just when we think we are the smartest, most spiritual, most effective, or most needed, somebody can come along and get the attention that we used to have and enjoy. Nothing is forever in this world, except God and his Word. And the Word of God says that God is love (1 John 4:8). God loves you. He loves you unconditionally. That means that he loves you when you’re good and he loves you when you’re bad. He will not love you less when you struggle and fail, and he will not love you more just because you did some good things. He loves you because he is love, not necessarily because you are worthy of his love. God’s unconditional love gives objective, unshakable, and consistent value and security to your life. Your successes and failures don’t define you or set your value. You are valuable because God made you and he loves you. No person and no experience can change that.
